Kirk Van Houten's New Apartment meme template

Kirk Van Houten's New Apartment is a meme format on WhatiMeme. Kirk Van Houten, freshly divorced in The Simpsons episode "A Milhouse Divided," proudly shows off his sad bachelor apartment as if it were a dream pad. The template is used for presenting an obvious downgrade, loss, or bare-minimum result with forced enthusiasm: spinning a setback as a lifestyle choice, or acting thrilled about something everyone can see is bleak.

A cartoon man with yellow skin, blue hair, and red round glasses stands at the right edge of a nearly empty room. He wears a white tank top, red shorts and a wristwatch, holds a red drink can in one hand, and sweeps the other hand out toward the room with a big open-mouthed smile. The room has a bare floor lamp, one small framed picture, a light switch, a door, a window, and a pair of blue slippers on a mauve carpet. Most of the left side of the frame is empty wall and carpet.

How to write this meme

Put a plain, honest setback on top. Then write the bottom line as Kirk would say it while showing off his empty apartment: cheerful, a little salesy, and clearly in denial. The bigger the gap between the bleak fact and the upbeat pitch, the better.

Caption zones

  • Top text — The setback, loss, or downgrade that just happened
  • Bottom text — Kirk's cheerful sales pitch that spins the setback as a perk

Example captions

  • Top text: Can't afford a couch anymore
  • Bottom text: Open-concept living, baby

An empty room gets a real-estate buzzword, which is exactly the energy of Kirk presenting his sad apartment.

  • Top text: Got dumped right before the holidays
  • Bottom text: More leftovers for me

The bottom line is aggressively upbeat about something obviously painful, matching Kirk's forced grin.

  • Top text: Company replaced raises with a pizza party
  • Bottom text: Unlimited pizza, technically

The word "technically" shows he knows it is a downgrade and is selling it anyway.

  • Top text: My team lost every game this season
  • Bottom text: No pressure next year

Total failure is reframed as a perk, the core move of the template.

  • Top text: Phone screen cracked in six places
  • Bottom text: Now it has character

Treating damage as a design choice mirrors Kirk pitching a bare room as a bachelor pad.

Common mistakes

  • Calling the character Abe or Grampa Simpson; he is Kirk Van Houten, Milhouse's dad
  • Using it for old-man or back-in-my-day jokes
  • Making the bottom line sad instead of cheerful
  • Picking something that is not actually a downgrade
  • Covering Kirk's face or the can
