How to write this meme
Write three beats and read them top to bottom. The first line should sound almost reasonable, the second should wobble, and the third should be the thing that cannot be reconciled. If the funniest line is not on the close-up, move it there. Keep each line short enough to sit on the panel without covering the eyes.
Caption zones
- Top panel — The first beat — a line that still sounds almost normal
- Middle panel — The second beat — the detail that starts to unravel the first line
- Bottom panel — The punchline — the detail that makes the whole thing impossible to follow
Example captions
- Top panel: Per my last email
- Middle panel: Which replied to a reply
- Bottom panel: Of a meeting that never happened
Each line is a normal office phrase until the last one erases the event the whole chain was about. The zoom matches the sinking feeling of opening the thread.
- Top panel: Insert tab A into slot B
- Middle panel: There is no tab A
- Bottom panel: There are seventeen slot Bs
Assembly instructions are a shared nightmare, and the counts get worse instead of clearer. The close-up lands on the useless surplus of the wrong part.
- Top panel: He was dead the whole time
- Middle panel: He was also the narrator
- Bottom panel: The narrator is a chair
The first twist is a cliché, the second is already strained, and the third abandons storytelling logic entirely. Escalation sells the absurdity.
- Top panel: The abstract says it's simple
- Middle panel: The methods cite the abstract
- Bottom panel: The conclusion cites a tweet
It mimics how a paper can point at itself until the last line leaves academia altogether. The joke needs a little familiarity with how papers are structured.
- Top panel: Key change on the bridge
- Middle panel: The bridge is in 7/8
- Bottom panel: The singer came in in 4/4
Each line is a real rehearsal problem, and together they describe a song that cannot be counted. Only people who have been in that rehearsal fully feel the third panel.
Common mistakes
- Putting the punchline on the top panel and leaving the close-up with leftover setup
- Repeating the same idea three times with bigger words
- Writing a paragraph that hides the face
- Using the strip for anger, triumph, or sadness
- Explaining why something is confusing instead of showing the confusing detail
- Making the three lines unrelated jokes instead of one escalating thought
