American Gothic meme template

American Gothic is a meme format on WhatiMeme. Used to label two people, groups, or ideas as a grim, old-fashioned, or long-suffering pair. The woman is usually the weary or side-eyed counterpart; the man is the stubborn, defensive, or “holding the line” counterpart. It often stands in for an unamused couple, judgmental elders, or two things that are stuck together and not happy about it.

A realistic painting of two unsmiling people standing side by side. On the left is a woman with light brown hair pulled back, wearing a dark brown dotted dress, a white collar, and a cameo brooch; she looks slightly off to the side. On the right is a balding man with round glasses, wearing a black jacket over denim overalls and a buttoned white shirt; he faces forward and holds a three-pronged pitchfork. Behind them is a white wooden house with a pointed Gothic-style window, green trees, a red barn to the right, and a pale blue sky. The painting is signed Grant Wood 1930.

How to write this meme

Treat the two figures as one grim unit. Give each a short label that clearly belongs with the other — a couple, a standoff, or two things stuck together. Lean on the unsmiling, old-fashioned mood instead of writing a joke that could sit on any random image. If a label needs a sentence, it is probably too long.

Caption zones

  • Woman — Label for the woman on the left — the weary, side-eyed, or stuck-with-it half of the pair
  • Man — Label for the man on the right — the stern, defensive, or pitchfork-holding half of the pair

Example captions

  • Woman: We'll circle back
  • Man: The ticket open since 2019

Both figures look stuck and joyless, which matches a promise that never dies and the work that never closes.

  • Woman: The recipe
  • Man: Me substituting half of it

They read as a grim household pair, so the cook and the chaotic substitutions feel like a long, unhappy marriage.

  • Woman: Dark mode everywhere
  • Man: That one site from 2004

The old-fashioned, unblinking energy of the painting sells a modern convenience standing next to something that refuses to change.

  • Woman: Read receipts on
  • Man: Me leaving it for 3 days

The woman’s side-eye and the man’s stare fit a tense standoff; the pair looks like they know exactly what they did.

  • Woman: Legacy code
  • Man: The intern assigned to it

The painting already looks like an unequal, no-escape partnership, so dumping ancient code on the newest hire lands immediately.

Common mistakes

  • Writing a generic top-and-bottom caption that ignores the two people
  • Labeling only one figure and leaving the other blank
  • Making the two labels unrelated
  • Covering the faces with a paragraph of text
  • Forcing a happy or hype joke onto a deadpan painting
