Domino Effect meme template

Domino Effect is a meme format on WhatiMeme. Used to show a chain reaction: a tiny initial action or decision sets off successively larger consequences until something huge happens. The joke is usually that the final outcome is absurdly out of proportion to the starting cause.

A man in a light blue shirt and khaki pants kneels on a black floor mat beside a row of upright white rectangular blocks. The blocks decrease sharply in size from a very tall slab on the left to a tiny piece on the right; he is touching or about to tip the smallest one with his finger. A dark brick wall is in the background.

How to write this meme

Pick a genuinely small, specific trigger and an outsized but still recognizable consequence. Keep both labels short so the eye can jump from the tiny blocks to the giant ones and feel the escalation.

Caption zones

  • Small cause — Names the minor trigger or first tiny step the person is “pushing”
  • Big effect — Names the huge final consequence represented by the largest blocks

Example captions

  • Small cause: Hitting snooze once
  • Big effect: Showing up to work in yesterday’s shirt explaining “traffic”

Everyday laziness balloons into an embarrassing public failure; the size jump matches the visual.

  • Small cause: I’ll just check one notification
  • Big effect: Three-hour doomscroll, cold dinner, existential dread

Hyperbolic escalation of a universal phone habit feels instantly true.

  • Small cause: Saying “we should hang out soon”
  • Big effect: Planning a destination wedding with someone you barely know

Social politeness spirals into an absurd commitment; contrast sells the joke.

  • Small cause: Adding one small feature
  • Big effect: Full rewrite, six new bugs, and a Slack thread named “uh oh”

Relatable software-scope creep mapped onto the growing dominos.

  • Small cause: I can train a puppy real quick
  • Big effect: Chewed couch, 2 a.m. potty walks, Googling “dog psychologist”

Optimistic pet decision vs. chaotic reality; the visual scale sells the regret.

Common mistakes

  • Labeling only the big end and leaving the cause vague
  • Making the “small” cause already huge so the scale joke dies
  • Writing long paragraphs that cover the blocks
  • Describing the image (“man tips dominos”) instead of a life situation
  • Forcing more than two labels when the joke is just cause → effect
